The reason that a ramp would need a variance is if the wheelchair ramp encroaches on a setback. A zoning setback is set by the local zoning board as to how far a structure must be set back from public property. For instance if the edge of the sidewalk is the property line and there is a twenty five foot setback, then the ramp would have to be constructed behind that twenty five foot mark. If it is not possible to construct a ramp behind the setback then a variance is most likely needed. Contact your local building and zoning to find the setback for your home.

A variance usually requires an application and processing fee. The application for a variance will have to be turned into the zoning authority before a specific date. When installing an Acorn Stairlift where there is a door at the top, for example the stairs to a basement, we have ways to tweak the measurements and lift the the top of the rail, installing extension brackets and extra brackets for stability. Doing this will allow the door to be closed with the lift in the storage and the swivel position. Leaving the door closed with the chair in the swivel position acts as a fall barrier, blocking the stairs. Also when opening the door the Acorn Stairlift is there ready for you to sit, swivel into riding position, then glide down the stairs. Notice in the image on the right that we are still able to have the footrest level with the floor at the top of the stairs.
